Reading/Writing Workshop
First, let me tell you how thrilled I am that we have a “normal schedule” this week.  Reading books will be going home as usual – thank you so much for making sure that these are read, recorded on the form and returned.  I plan to meet with each reading group multiple times throughout the week.  We’re still exploring the writing process and I am so proud of each first grade student, for they are really doing a great job with trying to tackle each word – before asking!  We will also be adding five new “rainbow write” first grade sight words this week.

Religion
We will have religion with Mrs. Nytes on Monday this week, rather than Wednesday to begin learning more and more about the changes in mass.  Aside from that, we’ll continue our focus of Baptism this week, as we begin describing how a person is baptized and come to realize that we, as Catholics, are followers of Jesus.

First Grade

November 28th – December 2nd

Our leadership focus this week is…
“Friends, friends, friends..”
The kindergarten and eighth grade classes are role playing situations for us this week during morning assembly.  This morning, they showed us how we could lose all of our friends if we aren’t careful with our behavior.  Throughout the week, we’ll learn more about how we could lose friends if we aren’t careful – but most importantly, we’ll learn how to make friends … and how to keep them!

Classroom News

Phonics/Word Work
At the beginning of the week, we will be learning about digraphs and identifying them within words.  The digraphs that we will be learning are: ch, sh, wh, th, ph, gn, kn, wr, and ck.  Towards the end of the week, we will begin discussing special vowel sounds.  We call these “pig pens”.  The first “pig pen” we will focus on is the “au” vs. “aw” sound.  On Friday, we will focus on the second “pig pen” – “ou” vs. “ow”.

Math
We’ll keep our focus this week of “counting on” from the greater number.  We will also begin using doubles, such as 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, and so on to solve addition facts.  We will then discover how using doubles helps us solve “near doubles” even faster, such as 2+3 and 3+4.  By the end of the week, we’ll be having a “use the strategies” workshop and preparing for our chapter test, which will take place early next week.

Science
We’ll be continuing our lesson this week on deserts.  We will also be learning about rainforests later in the week.

Additional news...
Our new addition!
J
We have a new addition in our first grade classroom.  An elf has appeared in our classroom, whom we have given the name “Dutches”.  Dutches” left us with a book called “Elf on the Shelf”, explaining that he would be watching our behavior each and every day.  After we go home each day, “Dutches” magically travels to the North Pole, where he reports our behaviors to Santa.  Sometimes the reports make Santa very happy, while other reports may cause him to become very sad.  We’ll be working hard as leaders to ensure that “Dutches” has a great report to share with Santa each and every day about each student in Miss Dietrich’s first grade classroom!

P.E. Classes
We have P.E. every Monday and Thursday.  Please make sure your child is sent to school in proper P.E. shoes on those days (tennis shoes).  If your child chooses to wear dress shoes or boots, please make sure he or she is sent with a pair of P.E. shoes (tennis shoes) in his or her book bag.

Friday, December 2nd
1:00 Dismissal – No bussing!
We will be dismissing at 1:00 p.m. this Friday for a teacher in-service.
There will be no bussing at dismissal.

Have a great week!

Social Studies
We will be learning about needs and wants.  We’ll be taking a look at many items and deciding whether each item is a need or a want.  Towards the end of the week, we will also be learning about how to spend money wisely.
