What are we doing in class?

Reading = We have finished the trilogy story of Shiloh.  This was a story about a young boy that finds an abused dog and is determined to keep him no matter the cost.  We watched the movies after we finished reading the book.  I am giving Benchmark testing now and will be starting new guided reading groups later this week.

Spelling=We are working on Unit 19 (the final “k”,”ng”, and “kw” sounds).  We skipped Unit 18 due to the Christmas break in order to keep in sync with our morning business and GROW programs.

Religion= Our current chapter is the study of the 10 Commandments and the Beatitudes.  The students are required to memorize all 8 Beatitudes and say them aloud to me by Monday, January 23rd.  The students will have time to study with partners in class and need to study at home.  We will be advancing into further chapters before we end the Beatitudes memorization.  Therefore, it is vital that the students need to study at home.

We just celebrated our class mass on Jan. 4th and the students did a great job with just coming back from Christmas break.

English/Writing= Our current unit of study is proper grammar and writing techniques: capitalization of proper nouns, titles, and abbreviations, using quotations correctly,  and correct forms of punctuation.  We will be moving on to adverbs within the next two weeks.

Our morning business sheets highlight the everyday skills needed not only in 4th grade but in life, also.  There are 5 problems everyday that we complete.  This is a great tool to help sharpen grammar skills.

Currently, we are writing haiku and acrostic poems.  We will also be writing short stories and letters to enhance our spelling, grammar, and correct formation skills.

Math= The students have been having an encouraging time doing “adult” multiplication.  The students have moved from basic multiplication facts (6x7) to (67x6), onto (679x6), and now (6,479x6).  I am extremely proud of how quickly they have picked up on the techniques and “crutches” that I’ve taught them.  Way to go class!!!

Next on the list will be double digit multiplication (67x48)!!!  Oh boy!!!

Social Studies= We are completing the South region and will be starting the Middle West region.  Our projects will be a map, using Microsoft Publisher to create a tour guide for the students’ state of study, and writing a letter to the selected state of study for an official tour guide packet (delivered to school).

The students will also learn about the Iditarod.  This is an Alaskan dog sled race that takes place every year and takes mushers on a journey of over 1,000 miles!!!  The students will pick their own mushers (actual mushers racing this year) and track their daily progress over the course of an average of 10 days to 2 weeks.  The students get so excited to see the progress of their dogsled team from day to day.  The winner in the class will get a prize from me!  Everyone will be able to track the progress of the students in the hallway.  A display will be set up outside our room.  The race usually starts in February.  We will watch a movie by the Discovery Channel about the Iditarod.  It is extremely interesting!!!!

Science= Currently we are discovering how animals survive.  We are learning about the different consumers: carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, scavengers, and decomposers.  Plants are producers.  Further studies will take us into food chains, food webs, and adaptations such as camouflage, behaviors, and physical body features, along with animals that live together in groups.   The students will complete projects that coincide with our study of animals for this unit.

Our next unit will include the human body and its systems!

PE= Every Monday and Thursday from 9:45-10:15.  Remember to bring the proper shoes.

Music= Every Tuesday from 9:15-9:45.

Computers= Every Monday from 12:30-1:15 and Friday from 9:30-10:15.

Library=Every Tuesday from 1:45-2:00.

Art= Our focus is a “winter” theme with snowmen, snowflakes, and mittens.  We usually have art on Friday afternoons.
